Frequently Asked Questions

  • RightSizing is adapting your personal arrangements – your home, your investments, your retirement options – to suit your changing needs.

You might be moving from a large suburban house to a downtown condo, or perhaps you’re looking to leave the city and buy a place in the country.

You may be selling the family home on behalf of elderly parents.

You may require the services of an estate lawyer or a financial planner – something you’ve never needed before – because of changes in your lifestyle.

Responding to these and related arrangements, RightSizing means making sure your new situation matches your specific needs.

  • All of us go through changes to our resources, our needs, our responsibilities, our stage of life.

The important thing is to manage the change, and get the best services, resources, and expertise working for you. The right time to RightSize is when changes happen – and that can be at any time.

We can help you determine if it’s the right time for you to RightSize, and then help you navigate every step of the way.

  • Selling a family member’s home is a major undertaking and can be an emotionally charged responsibility. Having a clear strategic plan can alleviate some of the anxiety and emotions. The first thing you’ll want to do is organize what questions you need answered for your specific set of circumstances.

This may mean talking with a real estate lawyer, a financial planner, or an expert in wills and bequests. It may mean contracting movers, packers, professional stagers, and others who can help you prepare the home for sale during these potentially trying times.

Every situation is different, and you’re sometimes tasked with making decisions when you don’t have all the answers or information right there in front of you.

The best thing to do in these potentially stressful times? Make sure that you work with people who can help you work through these important decisions and options.

At RightSizing.ca we have checklists, a network of trusted professionals, and the skills and expertise to pull together and coordinate all the moving pieces. We help ease the strain on you and your loved ones.

Call us when you need answers to those “what’s next?” questions. If you’re not sure which questions to ask, we can help you formulate the ones appropriate to your situation, so that you get the best possible answers to meet your needs.

  • If you’re downsizing, you’ll have a lot of questions about what to do with your possessions.

It is often overwhelming looking at your possessions and considering a big move. We can coordinate a sorting team to help identify what you’d like to keep for you new space.

You are there to make decisions and remain in full control, but our team handles all the work, making it as easy and comfortable as possible.

Once you decide what you would like to keep, you can sort the remainder into three categories: valuable, useful and sentimental.

Valuables that you no longer need can be sold, or donated to benefit your favourite registered charity, with you receiving a charitable tax receipt.

Useful items, such as an extra set of dishes, might not have much monetary value, but can be of great importance to organisations that help those in need.

Finding a new home for sentimental items can be challenging, but also rewarding. Navigating these decisions takes some time and some expertise in order to get it right. We can help you connect with various options, so you know that what’s not being moved with you moves on to the right place.

  • Selling the family home may be the most important financial decision you make in your lifetime. You’ll want to:

    • Make sure that you understand your options.
    • Begin to create a future life that matches your resources and suits your anticipated needs.
    • Take into account family dynamics and stresses.
    • Think about beneficial paths forward.

Often the best person to help you navigate these important decisions is an objective third party who is there to represent your best interests throughout the process. When you’ve raised your family in a home your emotional attachment is extremely strong and it can be a very difficult process to navigate strategically.

We are creative problem-solvers, we ask tough questions when they need to be asked, and we bring our compassion with us wherever we go.

It’s why we love working with people making this transition, and why they love working with us.

  • In the midst of major decisions about real estate and related activities, it’s not unusual to be unsure about next steps. Very few of us have the ability to ask all the right questions at precisely the right time – and anticipate the questions that may come up tomorrow or next year!

Talking with people who have the expertise to help you decide what’s right for you, and then help you decide what the best course of action is, can significantly reduce your stress.

We’re here to listen, to help you ask the best questions, and to help you preserve your personal and financial strength.

Having the professional support of a team who helps make these hard decisions every day will ensure you are in the right hands for self discovery and action plan building.
